چکیده

The substantial complexity of interdomain routing in the Internet comes from the need to support flexible policies while scaling to a large number of Autonomous Systems. Despite impressive progress in characterizing the various ills of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), many problems remain unsolved, and the behavior of the routing system is still poorly understood. This paper argues that we must understand interdomain routing in terms of: (1) intrinsic properties and design tradeoffs of policy-based routing, independent of the specific routing protocol and (2) properties that relate to artifacts in today’s protocol. We pose open questions for the research community that, if answered, should help us understand why BGP’s many problems are so difficult to fix. Understanding the fundamental properties of interdomain routing will help us decide how to make progress, be it making backward-compatible modifications to BGP or designing a radically different protocol.

Toward Compact Interdomain Routing

Despite prevailing concerns that the current Internet interdomain routing system will not scale to meet the needs of the 21st century global Internet, networking research has not yet led to the construction of a new routing architecture with satisfactory and mathematically provable scalability characteristics. Worse, continuing empirical trends of the existing routing and topology structure of ...

Privacy-Preserving Interdomain Routing at Internet Scale

The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) computes routes between the organizational networks that make up today’s Internet. Unfortunately, BGP suffers from deficiencies, including slow convergence, security problems, a lack of innovation, and the leakage of sensitive information about domains’ routing preferences. To overcome some of these problems, we revisit the idea of centralizing and using secure...

Analysis of Interdomain Traffic

This report presents the results from measurements of interdomain traffic traces. It discusses the implications of interdomain traffic characterization on the feasibility of interdomain traffic engineering. In the first part, we study the relationship between interdomain traffic and the routing view of the Internet. Our contributions are the following. The distribution of the traffic received b...

Center Selection and Migration for Wide - area

Interdomain multicast routing is a challenge, requiring a scalable solution that is suitable for diverse application characteristics. Center-based routing trees overcome some of the limitations associated with traditional shortest-path tree routing, however they present a new set of routing problems. Speciically, the choice of the center router can be critical in determining the multicast routi...
